"Last week, American Apparel was contacted through Facebook and informed that a student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was physically and verbally assaulted
for her sexual orientation. The victim was wearing one of the company's Legalize Gay t-shirts at the time of attack. Hate crimes such as this are abhorrent and we deeply condemn them. Despite the unfortunate event that triggered it, the immediate response of this young woman's fellow students to hold a campus wide rally as a show of unity
was incredibly inspiring. In response, we have run the following full page advertisement in the university newspaper offering free Legalize Gay t-shirts to any member of the student body who can put it to good use:"

American Apparel is a company that believes in freedom of expression and equal rights. We were shocked to hear that a student at UW-Whitewater was the victim of a gay-related hate crime while wearing one of our Legalize Gay t-shirts. American Apparel employees in Washington, DC endured similar bigotry first-hand last year when they received threatening phone calls and had their store window smashed for featuring the same garment on display.
We were deeply moved and inspired to hear how quickly a student rally was organized and how strong the response to this hate crime was. As a show of our support for this action, and the continued fight to change legislation, American Apparel would like to give a free Legalize Gay garment to any UWW student who would like one. Just stop by the IMPACT office on campus and pick one up or email firstname.lastname@example.org
