The Slacks They Are A-Changin'

We've taken a look at your survey feedback and found a few recurring comments:

"The pockets could be a little deeper."

"The pockets are a little small."

"You need to make them longer!"

"I think it would be great if they were all two to three inches longer."

Well, we hear you, and we agree. In response, we're lengthening the pants to an all-around 34 inseam, deepening the front pockets, and enlarging the back pockets to fit bigger wallets.

We've also heard from a lot of people who would like us to offer different lengths but, unfortunately, we just don't have the capacity to do that right now. We'll be looking into that in the future.

Keep that feedback coming our way.

What about us short people?? I'm hoping the smaller sizes have shorter inseams because I hate hemming all my pants...it never looks very good. Nonetheless, I'm super excited about these pants, long or not.

Posted by: dale 10/26/2006  16:12
Hey Shorty, how about you stop worrying about the inseam and start making me some Goddamn chocolate.

Posted by: tightabouttight 10/26/2006  16:59
the pants look good but you should consider making sizes that are smaller, maybe 28/29' around the waist so it could fit and look good on the skinny folks with no asses. most of the girls (and dudes) where i live wear super skinny jeans and would kill(pay 70 bucks) for super thight pants, they would force to get into a 28' jeans when in actuality they're 30' around the waist. if we wanted loose pants we'll go to walmart and buy a pair of dockers. aa should deliver. those prototypes weren't slim at all im sorry.

Posted by: alisha 10/26/2006  19:48
i really don't want the pants to be skin-tight that's just trashy. from the pictures i see, they look good. just don't let the thighs get too big (god i hate that, skinny pants with loose thighs look HORRIBLE..) and the inseam should be 34 especially if they're skinny.. just looks better. patiently waiting!!

Posted by: suepy 10/26/2006  21:03
yeah if you're going to make a unisex pant you should consider that not everyone is tall.. men tend to be taller and women tend to be on the shorter size. so different inseams would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very excited for the slim slack. When I first heard that American Apparel was in the process of a denim/pants line, I was very excited. However, when they hit the test stores, I was a bit dissapointed by the lack of denim friendly color. I know you have a royal blue jean, but if you were to have navy blue, black, and charcoal then it would make me so happy, it would probably add years onto my life.

[Pam: We'll be releasing black and asphalt when the full line comes out in the next few months. And if you want navy, vote for it!]

A 34 inch inseam is a bit long... i am a 5 foot 10 male and i can't even wear a 34 inch inseam, i don't want it dragging behind me getting all tattered and stepped on. There really should be a 32 inch inseam version... Think of the girls!

Posted by: Larry 10/27/2006  14:20
34? Aww. I was hoping for a 32 or 33. Aww well. We'll see how they fit in a few months I guess...

Posted by: crystal 10/27/2006  17:00
don't listen to them! 34 inseam is perfect, any shorter and my tall girl posse won't fit in them. i can't wait to try 'em on...i hope they come to the nw soon

Posted by: leaf 10/27/2006  18:11
a 34' inseam is the pratical choice. it can easily be altered to the desired length; it's practically impossible, though, to increase the length.

Posted by: Larry 10/27/2006  21:35
Yeah, but altering....takes the romance out of it. =]

Posted by: andrew fadairo 10/27/2006  21:38
Please can we have them wholesale too...

Posted by: tightabouttight 10/28/2006  00:03
34 inseam eh? that's real long. i mean i saw the picture of the girl (aa employee) wearing a white pair and because the pants are so long they almost looked like they're boot-cut at the bottom. what's the point of buying "slim" pants when they're gonna look like boot-cut pants when worn, and once again they have to be real tight/narrow.

Posted by: Gary 10/28/2006  01:23
why not go with lots of other jean size-methods and use

30x30
32x34 or whatever they do

base it on waist at least!

Posted by: Gina 10/28/2006  15:09
I agree! How about a shorter inseam? Let's make people of all sizes happy. Short, regular, and long. =]

Posted by: courtney 10/28/2006  17:18
i think 34 inseam is great,
maybe you could make a lower rise?

Posted by: Alex 10/28/2006  23:02
Oh, awesome news. Maybe you should start making only XL shirts and shipping a sewing machine with every order.
You can make them in all the silly colors you want, but the reason people started buying american apparel was the fit, and these pants aren't going to fit anyone under 6'0.
It was starting to look like AA was becoming a serious clothing company. Unfortunately, they just don't have the capacity to do that right now.

Posted by: Jessica Sampson 10/29/2006  21:43
Make them shorter, like a 30 inseam! Not everyone is a tall man!

Posted by: El 10/30/2006  10:08
It'd be great if you could somehow make it so that the part of the cloth where the button gets buttoned in doesn't curl...

Posted by: ben v 11/01/2006  05:07
iris, let's get in-store hemmers for these inseams. surely someone from each shop can work a sewing machine.
xxben

Posted by: E 11/01/2006  14:03
Lucky you, short people, hemming is better than walking around in pants that are too short! 34" inseam will be on the edge for me...skinny jeans need to be too long, that way they lok sexy instead of cheap! Can't wait to get a pair...

Posted by: anna 11/01/2006  18:32
I'm not sure how that inseam works but can we have sizes for the latina girls with big hips?!

Posted by: tyrone s 11/02/2006  09:30
This has got to be the most democratic denim project ever--pretty rad you guys--the way you actually use critical feedback to better the design and all.Very Cool

Posted by: m. lee 11/02/2006  10:58
what's the smallest waist you'll carry? I need a 24"-25" (or sz. XS like your cropped tight sweats). as for those who bitch about a 34" inseam- get a pair of f*in scissors or learn to sew!

[Pam: We've got you covered - the smallest size the slacks come in is a 24" waist.]

Posted by: shorty mcshorterson 11/02/2006  13:52
seriously! show some love for the majority of shorter people, yo! most of the regular people who shop in our stores are of average height, not super models who need a 34" inseem. at this rate, they will fit about 1/100th of our regular shoppers here in the midwest. :o(

Posted by: 5'2 11/02/2006  14:05
hacking the bottoms off is NOT SEXY. neither is cleveland tailoring, aka walking the backs off my too long pants as usual. 34" inseam = boo!
:o(

Posted by: awaterston 11/02/2006  19:38
as someone who is a 30x34, this makes me very happy, you short people dont know how hard it is to find tall skinny jeans, so dont complain, anyway, it takes 2 seconds to cuff your pants

Posted by: mind your biz 11/03/2006  07:59
I'd like to take a big bite out of that ass.

Posted by: deeves 11/03/2006  10:47
skinnier. although i'm sure if these take off there will be different styles to follow. yes?

Posted by: Shannon Johnson 11/04/2006  08:52
34 is too long!

Posted by: esme 11/04/2006  20:36
ooh u guys should make skirts too like the same style thing but like mini skirts not like really short but above the knee like mid-thigh

u no we neeed something to wear over all ur cool leggings and stuff

lisa: there is a skirt in the works..

Posted by: Grey 11/05/2006  00:43
34'd be great if we were all a few inches taller.

Posted by: Nazarina Larida 11/05/2006  06:14
can u make some that are for shorter people like length 30 inseam?

Posted by: candace 11/05/2006  08:47
So I guess there is no chance of a 35 or 36 inch inseam? 34 is a good start though. People have no idea how hard it is to find pants that are long enough not to mention actually look good and are made in the US. Anyone can take a too long pair of pants and get them hemmed but there is no way to make them longer.

Posted by: Funsized 11/05/2006  08:57
I think they need to be shorter inseam. Bad marketing idea If you do not. Then people will have to get them taylored adding another 20 bucks on the pricce.

Posted by: s 11/07/2006  07:38
or they can just do it themselves at home with scissors and thread.

Posted by: excited 11/08/2006  14:59
34" is a perfect length. I am a 5'10" male (and I normally have a 30" inseam), but a 34" inseam will give me the freedom to cuff or hem them as I need. American Apparel has always been about customization and DIY.

Posted by: 5'2 11/09/2006  21:16
can we get a pic of the slacks cuffed?

Posted by: Taylor 11/11/2006  17:11
34" inseam is a very good call on your part! Nothing beats long slim fitting denim!!!

We're stoked about getting these at VA1!

size 26 is too big and the 24 is too small..im a size 25
you guys should make in between sizes..25,27,29

love the slim fit and the small back pockets
love the length
love the red denim!

(i think 34 in length is ridiculously long any other store carries 32 in inseam...34 in is for like giraffes)

Posted by: 6'3 11/12/2006  09:49
no short people allowed!

Posted by: Cory 11/13/2006  18:23
I think it's kind of ridiculous to have a 34-inch inseam. I guess that's what happens when you choose to make a unisex pants. but honestly, at least at my local american apparel all of the girls who work there are 5 foot 5 or 5 foot 6. I just wish that you hadn't made the choice to lengthen them, however, power to the tall people i suppose. I am five foot two, by the way.

Posted by: Gary 11/13/2006  21:10
yea, it really seems like you should at least offer some of the jeans in 30" inseam... it seems like at least having 30" and 34" would cater to a much larger audience... even if you had to do it by color

Posted by: kate 11/18/2006  08:15
maybe, to make the short people of the world happy, you could just have some jean hemming directions on this site. it's incredibly easy, and if you do it right (or take it to a tailor for like five bucks), it doesn't look any different than the original hem.

Posted by: 6'4 12/29/2006  07:35
neeeed 36 inseam!!!

Posted by: alex 12/30/2006  15:24
um i just tried on a pair of slim slacks today in nyc, and they were definately not 34 inseam, they were much closer to a 32 in fact, if tried on 32s that were longer than these, can anyone explain this to me?

I'd strongly like to reiterate awaterston

you short people dont know how hard it is to find tall skinny jeans, so don't complain, anyway, it takes 2 seconds to cuff your pants

I wish SOMEONE would make slacks with a 36" inseam. I am female, 5'8" and have a 36" inseam. You can't find them that long. At least you people out there CAN hem your pants. I you don't like the way they look, try a tailor, it's not that expensive. I am resorting to making my slacks.

Posted by: jamie 3/05/2007  14:25
34 too long!? how about too short!! I'm 5'8"-5'9" and about a 26 inch waist. I'm extremely lucky to find a pair of pants that fit my about 36-37 inch inseam. try thinkin about us because all the short people can buy pants. I havn't gotten new pants in forever. i cant find any w/o spendin close to 100 bucks!.......yup i guess ill have to live with ripping the inseam out of all my pants. thanks.

I'm a real tall dude.. like 6'6 with a 36 inseam. Please make them 36. Shorter people shouldnt ahve a problem hemming them if they are true straight leg!

Posted by: clint 5/27/2007  13:54
the waist should be about 1 inch lower to accomodate more hip sizes. Peoples' hips measurements (male and female) vary quite a bit from the fashion industry standards.
also increase the amount of elastane in the material

-Overal the slack is a good deal

I have a really hard time finding close for my own hight as a 34 inseam. My son is 16 and 6ft 7. I can not find him pants to fit. His grandmother just died and I could not find him any 32 x 38 slacks anywhere. He had to wear black Levi's to his grandmothers funeral.
There are several children at his school that are as tall as him. Why should they have to suffer because they are not fat and tall? Big and Tall only works for over weight tall men!
Please someone in fasion help these boys. Just because they are tall does not mean they do not want to look great!

Posted by: Neva 7/22/2007  05:52
my son is 16 and 6'5" we need 32 x 38 inseam jeans / pants... he just can't wear shorts in the winter here (WV) winter is approaching and we need jeans!!! help!!! thanks!!

Posted by: Katie 7/23/2007  21:56
For all those girls trying to find pants out there ALLOY.com has inseams from 30'' - 37" and for those fellow tall girls Victoria's Secret occasionally has 36" inseams.

Posted by: 5'8 8/17/2007  03:53
I am 5'8" and I am 115 pounds...I can never find jeans that are long and skinny enough. My long skinny legs look great in skinny jeans, so short people shouldn't even wear them. It doesn't look right on their body type. And skinny jeans aree for SKINNY people. Fat people shouldn't wear them and you know it. Not to be harsh, but it can make their top body look heavy...a flare evens it out.

Posted by: chubbygirl. 12/28/2007  21:56
i have nice legs, but i have a chubby waist, am I going to have trouble fitting into these clothes? my waistline is 34".

Posted by: Mia 6/20/2008  21:40
Tall girls?
34 inseam?
Are you kidding me?
I'm a tall girl.
I'm 6 feet.

I wear a 37 inseam, if I'm lucky, I'll find a 38.

...34. THAT SUCKS.

Oh and I do get my jeans from alloy, someone mentioned that.
Buckle also.
But I just wish AA was more flexible.
Tall girls buy clothes too you know.
I like to have long sleeves and torso lengths that compliment me.

-Waiting for a change.

Posted by: Adrian 7/29/2008  11:12
How about we get pants with a 36 inch waist?

Posted by: martyn 8/10/2008  12:44
you need to make shorter clothes too! i'm 5'6" - the 27's and xs's fit great - after i've had a tailor take 3"s off the bottom... a lot of people post about this online - take some action! how about giving us a choice of leg/shirt length as well as waist/chest size?

Posted by: Savine 8/11/2008  09:27
Make a nice deep dark red. a little cheaper in canada wouldnt be bad either

Posted by: hannah 9/25/2008  15:00
i'm 5'7 and need around a 34/36" inseam, tried on some leggings in aa the other day and they were like capri-length :((
so i say add a little length please, we all come in many shapes and sizes and it's a bit ignorant to make one length (etc)...the customer afterall, is what keeps you in business. x

Posted by: amou 5/16/2009  01:03
yeah I think there should be the usual 3 options for lengths, so everyone can wear them. Like, idk, is it only really short girls and one average girl(me) that shop at aa?
