Fashion blog Style Bubble's latest post shines some
light on the oft-overlooked fashion magazines of Asia, which definitely
don't get the attention that the Vogues of Western countries do. One
particular photoshoot from Chinese fashion magazine iLook caught our
eye: our Lamé Legging on the Great Wall of China.
Globalization, indeed.

| Our colleagues in
Japan sent over some
photos from the
Terry Richardson
exhibit "Rio to Hong
Kong" (Sponsored by
Diesel Hong Kong)
currently on in Hong
Kong. It runs from
12/1-12/23 so if
you're in that
corner of the world,
stop on by. And Japan, you're in
luck: American
Apparel Japan is
currently discussing
bringing the same
Terry Richardson and
his father Bob's
exhibition to Nippon
in the spring of
2008. The venues (to be
confirmed) are
Laforet Harajuku
(Terry Richardson)
and Mori Museum (Bob
Richardson). They sent over some
very NSFW photos so
we're sharing the
tamer ones with you.
Here are some photos
from the exhibit.

The Obstacles of Outsourcing

Today's Small Business Summit Center story in the NY Times is by guest
blogger Stacey Blume, owner of underwear and lingerie company Blume Girl. She
chronicles her experiences and the dilemma of manufacturing in the US vs.
outsourcing to China, which has been a topic of great debate particularly as
of late. Stacey initially began sourcing garments for her new
clothing line at American Apparel then as her business expanded, she
moved production over to China to manufacture at half the cost but not
without a slew of problems that came with that such as manufacturing and
quality control issues and language barrier. After several frustrating
attempts and trying out different foreign factories, she realized that the it
wasn't worth the trouble and cost savings and has returned to producing
her underwear at the original manufacturer, American Apparel. Read the whole story here.

It may be wintry cold in most parts of the US and the Northern Hemisphere
but it's the Summer of Love over in Tallahassee, FL. Courtnay C. from Florida State University
sent us these snaps from a 1967 Summer
of Love party that she and her roommates recently attended. I don't
know how popular the Cotton Spandex Jersey Too Short Tube Dress back in
the '60s but no matter, these lovely ladies are wearing flowers in their hair and
are ready for a love-in.

Tucson's alt-weekly be hatin'!

| Every year Tucson's alt-weekly, the aptly named Tucson Weekly, has an article called "GET OUT OF TOWN", a "list of people, organizations and entities that we wish would just go away". Number one on this year's list was American Apparel Ads!
The following was written by Tucson Weekly writer Jessica Wofford. AMERICAN APPAREL ADS After students and educators walk by the life-size prints at American Apparel's University Boulevard store, many of them come to the same conclusion: American Apparel's models look underage, underweight and possibly strung out on heroin.
Then there are the poor, fuzzy animals that often appear in the background of print ads, looking really helpless. Even real animals, like the models, look sedated. In an AA online photo collection titled "Human Dog," a poor pooch has been tucked into bed. (See the American Apparel Web site.) Their Web site states: "American Apparel is known for comfortable clothing as well as provocative photography." Well, how comfortable is it to pose upside down to make sure your pants fit? (Check out the photo album titled Valeria, "Sofia Shoots Valeria in Montréal.") AA's ads need to get out of town. They lack serious political, artistic, literary or scientific value. Simply put, they're just not cool. " Snap!

The Ad-dressing of Cats

This sexy yet
familiar looking
series of ads for
Cats on
Broadway, which
is a "pseudo-revival
of the acclaimed
Andrew Lloyd Weber
musical, Cats,
caught our eye.
The synopsis on the
theater's site
sounds, mm,
interesting: Set on the border
between Bed-Stuy and
Bushwick (Broadway,
Brooklyn) and
performed in the
newly renovated
Bruce High Quality
Foundation Theater
(1100 Broadway,
Brooklyn), Cats on
Broadway brings
together an
all-volunteer cast
of performers,
musicians,
stagehands, and
designers to reflect
the emotional
conflicts of the
gentrification of
Brooklyn while
satirizing both the
utopian reform
schemes and
self-pitying
nihilism often
associated with the
artists responsible
for gentrification’s
“first wave.” Cats on Broadway
consists of a series
of vignettes
progressing from
late at night to
early morning. Each
vignette uses an
original arrangement
of a popular song
performed by the
Bruce High Quality
Orchestra to situate
a different
character in the
neighborhood
(shopkeeper,
minister, hoodlum,
college student,
prostitute, etc.)
contextualizing
their individual
circumstances within
themes of nostalgia,
rage, sex, family,
labor, redemption,
etc. And everyone is
dressed like a
cat. We'll be there.

Think Pink

Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej has started a national pink shirt
fashion craze after royal astrologers determined that pink would
be king's color for luck and he was recently spotted in a pink shirt and
blazer combo. It's got the public lined up and camping out in front of
stores while factories are working hard to keep up with the demand. And
apparently, this isn't the first time the king's sparked a trend: it's a
tradition for Thais to wear bright yellow shirts on Mondays as it was the day
of the week that His Majesty was born. For a guy who has no official
political power, he sure has some clout. For Thais and lovers who don't want to bother with queueing up for hours,
may we suggest the Fine Jersey Leisure Shirt, which comes in a lovely Lemon
color and two shades of Pink? Photo Source: AP, BBC News

fox wears AA leggings, mother goes wild

So my mother lives in England. She called me up all excited-like last night.
"Have you ever heard of the band CSS, Jordykins?" Yes I have, Mom. "Oh. Well, I just read something in the Sunday Times: the singer says that she always wears American Apparel! Imagine that! I'll email you the site and you can send it to the owner (the one with the mustache, I believe?) and I'm sure he'll give you a promotion, right?" Of course he will, Mom. "You'll have me to thank when you're the boss of the company!" Of course I will, Mom. So here it is, Dov:
"[CSS' singer Lovefoxxx] loves clothes but doesn't care about fashion. Does she shop? "Yes, but I don't find anything I like. I buy American Apparel leggings that I wear every day. Everything else is boring." Get back to me any time about that promotion, Dov.
