The Evolution of the T-Shirt

Posted by: Lisa  8/19/2009  16:05
The Fall fashion issue of NY Mag has a piece on the evolution of the t-shirt and how far its come along from its humble beginnings as a functional undershirt worn under clothing a few decades ago. Over the years, the process of creating a t-shirt has gone under a multitude of experiments and tinkering to become today's high fashion statement piece. And American Apparel gets a mention too:

The greatest breakthrough of the last decade was when American Apparel, under the direction of its free-loving founder Dov Charney, turned the fit of a T-shirt into a message. Never mind the graphics or slogans. The message was you: your body thrust out there into the world, shrink- wrapped in every conceivable color. American Apparel remains powerful and ubiquitous in the T-shirt world, but the trends have gotten subtler and more introverted.

As America's largest garment manufacturer, it's nice to know that we're not just pumping out t-shirts but contributing something to the big picture. We've also been doing our share of experimentation here at the factory - like our burn-out t-shirts - watch a video here of how it's done.
